Built in 1897 and meticulously preserved, our residence has been a cherished part of Scotland's heritage, transitioning from its origins as a grand sporting estate.

Built

1897, owned by the Family of Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, under the marital name Shelley-Botein

Glencruitten House

Extended in 1903 to include an additional master suite, dressing room and central kitchen by Architect Edward Appin

Sold

In 1920, at that time a 2,500 acre estate to to the Wealthy Businessman Alexander Mackay

Renovated

Undertook major renovation and works completed in 1926 which included new staff quarters, upgraded dining room and the central piece of the house, the Library. Works were undertaken by the renowned and highly regarded Sir Robert Lorimer

RAF Military Base

Circa 1930s Member of the Mackay family married into the Wallenberg Banking family. The wedding was attended by the Swedish King at Glencruitten House. Mid 1930s, the Mackay family supported the World War efforts by allowing Glencruitten House to be used as a RAF military base. The exact details and duration are not known.

Cathedral of Trees

1937 Alexander Mackay passed away and was buried at the Cathedral of trees which can still be visited to this day and remains on the Glencruitten Estate still owned by the heirs of Alexander Mackay.

Expansion

1950's the estate grew to 3000+ acres and included 2 farms, gaming, fishing and golf, multiple outbuildings for staff including garages, drivers cottage, gardeners cottage and laundry.

Sold

2005 Glencruitten House, the outbuildings, walled garden and near forest was sold to Rev David James. It was opened up as a religious retreat and a house of multiple occupancy until 2021
Glencruitten House

Current Ownership

2021 Glencruitten House was sold to the now owners as primarily their family home where they permanently reside, as well as being established as a luxury guest house.
